Professor Khurshid Ahmad

Professor Khurshid Ahmad (23 March 1932 – 13 April 2025) was a Pakistani economist, philosopher, and Islamic scholar widely regarded as a founding figure of modern Islamic economics. Born in Delhi, he moved to Lahore after Partition and later earned a PhD in Economics from the University of Leicester, UK. He co-founded The Islamic Foundation in Leicester alongside Khurram Murad and served as its chairman for over two decades. In Pakistan, he served as Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, and as a Senator for three terms. He also founded and chaired the Institute of Policy Studies, Islamabad, and edited the monthly Tarjuman-ul-Quran. Over his lifetime, Professor Ahmad authored and edited around 70 books in English and Urdu on Islamic economics, politics, and thought, and was awarded Pakistan’s highest civil honour, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, in 2011.
